It was just after eight pm on a Tuesday and despite the fact that we were promised a dry evening, it hadn't stopped pouring down rain! Mark and I were relaxing talking over the sports, prepared for the seventh call for the day to arrive. Eventually we received a call from a girl on a company trip who had pulled into the Esso filling station in Pippin Street and filled petrol in her diesel elegant VW Beetle lease car by mistake. The unfortunate thing was pretty troubled apparently, stating "I cannot believe that I've messed up the vehicle! I am so used to filling up my petrol vehicle I completely did not remember that I was using a diesel!" I asked her to calm down and not to be concerned, and that these things do happen. She had managed to maneuver the vehicle to a safe position and, because it was no more than a few miles off from where we were, we could find the lady quickly. The wrong fuel was extracted and she was able to return to the motel she was residing at. Despite the fact we got thoroughly soaked, it was all worth the effort seeing her drive off contented and less stressed. A fuel drain in Lancashire done well in my mind!

The 3 things you HAVE TO know about Wrong Fuel!

AdBlue In Your Diesel

Throughout Lancashire we have seen increasingly more occurrences of AdBlue contamination when somebody has poured AdBlue straight into their diesel fuel tank. This is in part thanks to motorists being unsure of how to work with it (please note: it's in truth not a fuel additive), and partly due to the fact that the filler necks for diesel and AdBlue are often right close to each other on the vehicle.

Now, what's the issue with putting AdBlue in your diesel vehicle?

Seeing as the product is primarily ionised water, it's nearly as good as putting water into your tank. Diesel and water don't blend in any way and trying to run a diesel car on water will never work. Moreover, the urea is incredibly corrosive to the fuel system lines and seals and is prone to crystalising, obstructing injectors and fuel filters. Assuming you put AdBlue in the fuel tank empty it right away. And most certainly don't start the engine - not even to relocate it from the pump. Assuming you have started the vehicle you may most likely have to have the entire fuel system flushed and filters changed out.

In case you find yourself in this situation do not fret or panic! Call us, the UK’s Best fuel contamination company. Our technicians have the technical competence and experience to have you back on the road promptly and efficiently, no mess, no hassle.

Boat Fuel Drains

If perhaps there is the wrong fuel, or perhaps contaminated fuel (most commonly water contaminated or old fuel) in a boat we can help drain it. So long as the boat is either dry-docked, or parked near to an automobile parking bay we should be able to gain access to the fuel storage tanks and drain out the fuel. We've undertaken many fuel drains at marinas and boatyards nationwide.

Wrong Fuel in Car in PR6 Postcode - Pippin Street Misfueling

What a great night's uninterrupted sleep! It was 7:30 in the morning on a gloomy Tuesday and we were en route to assist an elder lady who had put the wrong fuel in her diesel new Mercedes-Benz SL-Class in Pippin Street. She informed us that she drove away from the petrol station forecourt and stranded on a country road along the way to visit her family. I punched the location in the TomTom and got there inside an hour or so. I got to the stricken lady and removed the contaminated fuel in the car car. Whilst I was working she explained, "Now I'm getting fairly absent-minded in my old age and did not remember about the car working with diesel seeing that I'd only just acquired it a week back after my other car, which I'd owned for more than 25 years, finally gave up the ghost". I got the drain completed and she presented me a toffee and thanked me for my work. Such a delightful Lancashire lady!

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VA receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
